Mature age job prospects and career change
Hi there,
Today’s blog is the forth in a mini- series of four, which relate to job prospects for mature age workers considering career change within the Australian context. There are constant calls in the media for people to work longer and delay their retirement.
The series includes blog discussions as follows:
• Where is the information about job prospects in Australia?
• What are the industry trends in job prospects in Australia?
• Is there specific career information about job prospects for women?
• What are the job prospects and opportunities for mature age workers?
Is there specific career information about job prospects for mature age workers?
The job prospects provided here have been sourced from the Australian Government’s Skills Info website, which offers a report called ‘New Jobs’, published in 2009.
It might be surprising for you to know that the group with the strongest growth in new jobs was those aged 65 plus, followed by those aged 55-64 years of age.
Over the past ten years until 2009, the industries that provided the largest number of new jobs for mature age workers were
• Health care and social services
• Education and training
• Manufacturing
• Construction.
Most growth correlated with those with higher skills levels. The message here is upgrade if you can. Many mature age people choose to upgrade and gain a new lease on life with further education and training.
If you are looking at career change later in life, then as a mature aged worker, you already have a vast range of transferrable skills that you may take for granted. We can help you articulate what these skills are, so that you can approach employers confidently and be the applicant of choice. You are welcome to comment on the blog and let us know what your experience has been as a mature age career changer.

Bye for now,
Leanne
